Cruise Ship Work Tent – France

When a cruise ship was in port for a refurbishment of the outdoor swimming pools, there was a very tight time window for the works to take place. Fast Tent inflatable work tents were used, as an alternative to scaffolding and sheeting, to provide weather protection and temperature control to the works.

Client

Established in 1979, Shield are specialist technical contractors, working across a range of sectors, all over the UK.

Problem

In October 2019, MV Britannia was scheduled for a brief visit to a shipyard in France for a refurbishment of the outdoor pools. Weather protection of the pools area was essential to enable the work to take place. Services Group had initially considered erecting a scaffolding and shrink wrapping. However, that would have taken many days to set up and dismantle.

Solution

As an alternative to a temporary scaffolding structure, Njordair supplied four of our 16’ long x 20’ wide (5m long x 6m wide) Fast Tent modules. Since the modules are designed to be joined together if required, this created a dry and temperature controlled working area 64’ long x 16’ wide. Each 6m wide module erects in just 46 seconds and was then slid across and over the pool area.

Fast tent was a lower cost solution compared with scaffolding but it was also much more flexible. It could be rapidly deployed and moved and of course, once purchased, could be used on other projects in the future.

Although 6m wide Fast Tents are always available from stock, on this occasion the work tents were custom built. This meant that we were able to customise the colour and branding to match the customer’s ‘corporate identity’.
